The Brotherhood Open gets underway at The Grange — birdies, bunkers and a big drive on debut

The Grange Golf Club, Adelaide  ·  Round 1

Round 1 of the Brotherhood Open teed off today at The Grange Golf Club — a course that has played host to LIV Golf on Australian soil — and the occasion didn't disappoint.

A cracking day with a bit of everything thrown at us—sun, wind, and a true four-seasons-in-one-round kind of day. Tough conditions, especially with the wind fighting us most of the way, but the boys dug deep and kept pushing through.

Brian Adams, Josh Adams, Gabriel Mezzatesta and Dom Scali lined up for what promises to be a fiercely contested series — and while the scorecards had their fair share of blemishes, there were enough bright spots to leave everyone talking on the walk back to the clubhouse.

At the top of the leaderboard, Josh and Gab are tied for 1st on 36 points after a tight and competitive round played off the professional tees. Dom Scali sits on 29 points, highlighted by a classy birdie, while Brian is not too far behind on 24 points and still well within striking distance.

Plenty of solid golf all around, with pars being traded across the group and momentum shifting throughout the day—setting things up perfectly for a close finish.

In the 4 Ball Better Ball, the partnership standings are just as tight, with Dom and Gab leading on 46 points, closely followed by the Adams family on 44 points. It’s a close one—let’s see how they fare tomorrow.

How they fared today:

Some highs:

  • Brian Adams: Came agonisingly close to an eagle on the 4th, ultimately settling for a tap-in birdie from just 15cm.
  • Josh Adams: Uncorked a mammoth 291-metre drive that turned heads and set the tone for the day.
  • Gabriel Mezzatesta: Solid pars on a genuine LIV-grade layout — no mean feat on a course of this calibre.
  • Dom Scali: Picked up a birdie on one of the par 5s — always a satisfying way to get on the board.

Some lows:

  • Brian Adams: The bunkers were unforgiving — one hole required four shots just to escape the sand.
  • Josh Adams: A nightmare hole from 75 metres out — it took eight shots to find the bottom of the cup.
  • Gabriel Mezzatesta: The speed and contours of the greens proved a real challenge, costing him throughout the round.
  • Dom Scali: Three consecutive 3-putts were a painful stretch that will be remembered at the 19th hole.

Wrap up

The weather played its own role as a fifth competitor. With wind gusts reaching 40 km/h and light rain arriving in waves, nothing was straightforward — approach shots drifted, putts broke more than expected, and club selection became a guessing game on exposed holes. That any birdie was made in those conditions is a small victory in itself.

Four shots to get out of one bunker — a line that will follow Brian Adams for some time, but his near-eagle on the 4th is the story he'll be telling at every opportunity.

The Brotherhood Open is just getting started. With Round 1 now in the books — birdies claimed, bunkers endured, and one enormous drive measured — the competition is well and truly alive. Stay tuned.
